Now I don’t want to compare him to any other artist, because NY*AK has managed to create an entirely new sound of his own. But to give a brief introduction, 33-year old Andrew Scott, also known as NY*AK, has a sound that can be best described as an admixture of the jazz-based elements of J Dilla, and the deep house tempo of Kerri Chandler. The two sounds counterbalance each other in such a harmonic way; his music is suitable for many moods. And while sampling is nothing new to the world of music, he manages to loop, diffuse and chop them up in a jarring way that is not exactly common standard. His music does what I think a great beat maker or DJ is supposed to do – create atmosphere. While listening to one of his tracks, you experience a feeling of contentment and pure, genuine appreciation. His sounds force you to listen with an active ear. Songs such as “The Vulture” incorporate components of a deeply soulful and poetic sample by Gil Scott Heron, backed by pulsating electric keyboard and a funky bass line that you can’t help but groove to.
