Complex Talks To Lupe About The Lasers “Fiasco”

Complex Magazine meets with Lupe to try to clear the air on this Lasers “fiasco”. Basically, him and his record company have reached a stalemate. He needs to just drop the label and go independent. This is getting ridiculous. He also explains more about his punk endeavours with Japanese Cartoon and the new album, Food and Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album, that he’s been working on since Lasers was finished almost three years ago. Read to the end ’cause he went off on a mad rant about defining ‘success’.

I don’t know about you but I love interviews, I could read/watch these shits all day. All I can say in regards to him is that this just adds to the story/character of Lupe as an artist. True hip hop, true punk sensibilities run through this guy and I’m glad that he’s not succumbing to the powers that be. At the end of this debacle, his fans will just love him that much more and you know for damn sure we’ll be hearing Lasers in the future, one way or another.

Just to summarize, Lasers has been done for two and a half years. I started on another album after that, with features on it and all types of craziness. But everything was supposed to be in time. What messed up the schedule when Lasers didn’t come out when it was supposed to. So you get this backlog. And then Lasers kinda prematurely leaked out because of all these songs leaking. It’s kind of like an unclear moment of what Lupe Fiasco album-wise is going to be. So I would just say stay tuned. Don’t believe anything unless I tell you. Please don’t believe anything anybody says unless I say it from my official Twitter page or my official UStream page. I’m like one of three people who actually know what’s going on. In the meantime, we’re going back on tour. We’ll see you guys out there on stage. There might a Japanese Cartoon tour coming up too.

The Modline Artist Profile: DJ NaNa

Moonlighting for The Modline, I got to sit down with T. O.’s, DJ NaNa, while he was here in Vancouver for the westcoast leg of his tour.

J: I want to know what kind of influences you have, is it Dilla, Q-Tip, etc.?

N: Rza, Primo, Pete Rock, Dilla, Quincy Jones, I don’t know if you’re familiar with old Motown sounds like Gamble & Huff. There’s more, there’s other stuff but those are 6 names that I dropped there that would definitely be the people that have inspired me. Rick Rubin. What they’re doing as musicians, as producers and visionaries.

J: They’re all pioneers in their own right.

N: Exactamundo. They’re pushing their own things. And it didn’t necessarily fit into any box. They’re a bunch of circles in square pegs. They were able to carve their own niche.

Complex Previews Nipsey’s “South Central State of Mind” Album

Ever since The Game debuted in 2005 with The Documentary, there haven’t really been any prominent new West Coast rappers to emerge. Enter Nipsey Hussle. The lanky, Los Angeles-raised, Rollin’ 60s Crip has kept heads noddin’ with his vicious Bullets Ain’t Got No Name mixtape series and gotten heavy co-signs from Snoop Dogg and Game, in addition to a spot on XXL’s prestigious “Freshmen Class” cover earlier this year. His debut album, South Central State of Mind, features guest appearances from Lloyd and Kevin Cossom, production from the likes of Mr. Lee, The Runners, and J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, and is “80% done,” according to Nipsey. Which means it’s ripe for us to break down and analyze. It’s Hussle in the house!

J. Cole – Villematic

Cole spits a verse over Kanye’s “Devil in a New Dress” beat and absolutely kills it. I’ve got a feeling this instrumental is gonna be used a lot.

Up & Coming: Vocalist | Misha-Q

I stumbled on Misha-Q through the F as in Frank blog during a Sunday afternoon blogroll session. I must admit, even before hearing any of her work I was already sold. With her style, talent, and hunger, she most definitely has what it takes to make it big.

As she makes waves here in Vancouver, I’m sure bigger things are just around the bend.

Kanye apologizes to Taylor

I woke up Saturday morning on my twitter. Scrolling down, all I saw was Kanye’s tweets, one after the other, tons… I only read a few and got ready for work. Later on that day, TMZ reports ‘Kanye Goes on Twitter Rampage, Seeks Forgiveness’

Here’s more from his tweets via TMZ

Kanye posted nearly 100 tweets in a little over two hours. It started innocently enough with: “Man I love Twitter… I’ve always been at the mercy of the press but no more… The media tried to demonize me.”

Then it moved on to: “Remember in Anchor Man when Ron Burgandy cursed on air and the entire city turned on him? But this wasn’t a joke. This was & is my real life.”

And: “People tweeted that they wish I was dead… No listen. They wanted me to die people. I carry that. I smile and take pictures through that.”

Then he finally brought up Taylor: “I wrote a song for Taylor Swift that’s so beautiful and I want her to have it. If she won’t take it then I’ll perform it for her.”

Later: “When I woke up from the crazy nightmare I looked in the mirror and said GROW UP KANYE … I take the responsibility for my actions … I am not a bad person. Even in that moment I was only trying to do good but people don’t always need my help … Beyonce didn’t need that. MTV didn’t need that and Taylor and her family friends and fans definitely didn’t want or need that.”

Damn, at first I didn’t know what is was all about since I didn’t know where it started. A song for Taylor Swift? Something, everybody wants to hear.
