EP Review | Hodgy Beats: Untitled

The latest release from the OFWGKTA crew comes from MellowHype frontman, Hodgy Beats. The short but effective 22-minute EP features some superb production from the likes of Juicy J, The Alchemist, Flying Lotus and Thelonious Monk. At first, looking at the unorthodox front cover, I really didn’t know what to expect from the project but once I played it through, I was pleasantly surprised.

Instead of doing his best Slim Shady impersonations like on other Odd Future tracks, Hodgy takes a different approach on the dolo EP. The lyrics and subject matter are really just focused on his real life. A 21-year old MC, who went from being broke to blowing up with his crew and travelling around the world with his rap shit. “The art belongs to whoever draws it. At heart, I’m an artist who knows his flow is flawless…” he raps on The Alchemist produced ‘Cookie Coma’. Making music, counting big faces, engaging in the daily herb intake and getting approached by groupies isn’t that original but you can’t be mad at that because he’s just rapping his reality.

On the Flying Lotus produced cut, ‘Lately’, Hodgy switches up the flow and rides the super laid back beat like a pro.

I’m minimizing my cuss words, no absurd crippin’ or bloodwork, or knowing how a gun works…

- He spits on the introspective ‘If Heaven Is A Ghetto’. Again, less of the shock value and more on his genuine thoughts which is refreshing to hear. You definitely hear the versatility and personality of Hodgy Beats on the record which only helps the average OF follower differentiate him from other members like Tyler, Earl & Domo.

Aside from only being 20 minutes long, the Untitled EP is potent enough to hold listeners off until the groups next project, OF Tapes Vol. 2, which drops later this month. Bear witness, the future is now.
